Reflection of Hornberg and McKay's Sociolinguistics and Language Education :: Chapter 13. Language Identity by Bonny Norton

This text was rather a difficult text to read. However, the way I interpret "identity" from this text is not just by your origin, ethnicity, etc., but also by your gender, sexual orientation, class, and more.

This texts also makes me think of investment vs interest. This is how I interpret the text: to have the students be interested in learning a second/foreign language, of course, it has to be of interest.Sure, students can be interested in learning a new language, but investing in a language is a whole new level. In my opinion, investment is a level where authenticity takes place. Students have to be able to use it in real life and be able to apply it wherever they go outside of their classroom. Communities can be built into the classroom and have students try new things. This application helps the students invest in the language. They invest because they have an interest.
